history

This may be a simple question, but I'm asking it anyway...does anyone have any information on how singing became the main expression of worship in the church rather than other forms of expression - writing, moving, sculpting, prayer...Perhaps because it is something most can do and we can do it together?

Well, in the Old and New Testament there is a lot of emphasis on music and singing as a form of worship and celebration. In the OT there seems to be more emphasis on the visual arts, dance, and other traditions, i.e. use of incense, sacrifice, special clothes for priests, feasts. In the NT it comes to my mind mostly singing. Perhaps that is where it began - mostly singing. There is a lot of singing going on in heaven it seems. The Catholic Church has retained its visual arts, encouraging icons as a worship tool - but there is not dance. After the Reformation church art was reduced, and especially in the Anabaptist tradition - trying to avoid idols - they threw the baby out with the bathwater. This is an interesting question and I am looking forward to the other responses.

Love,
Mom
